Our film scanning procedure and details

All slide formats can be scanned.

Great care is given to protect your photography before, during and after scanning. All film is handled with cotton gloves. Every effort is made to remove dust from your film prior to scanning with compressed air or soft camel’s hair brush.

  • Slides removed from trays or carousels and cleaned with soft camel’s hair brush or compressed air prior to scanning.
  • By default, the order of slides maintained only if slides are NOT a combination of Kodachrome and other brands.
  • Autofocus for each slide.
  • Default 4000ppi resolution (35mm slides) scans at 24 bit depth (16,777,216 color variations).
  • The scanner utilizes Advanced Digital ICE-4 which removes defects or scratches detected on the film surface without losing detail of the original image.
  • Manual image editing (crop, touch ups, color, and contrast). Images saved in requested format (eg. JPG or TIFF files).
  • Another complete set of your scans as “web friendly” image file available on request
  • Each image file is inspected for correct color balance after auto color is applied. Sometimes manual color correction is required to provide the best color balance (see post).

All film sizes of film can be scanned. This includes Kodak disks, 110 film, 35mm, medium format to large format (4 x 5") and large transparencies.

As with slides, the same care and attention is employed to ensure quality images are obtained.

  • Negatives removed from packaging and cleaned with soft camel’s hair brush or compressed air prior to scanning.
  • Order of film strips contained in sleeves will be maintained. Special image file naming available on request.
  • Autofocus for each frame.

Kodachrome

Kodak Kodachrome slides were so common and special that Nikon included a special scanning mode with the Nikon CoolScan.
For best possible images, Kodachrome slides are always captured using the Kodachrome scanning mode.

Slide formats

Most slides are in a 2 x 2" holder. The size of film varies from 13 x 17mm to the 127 Super slides (1.9 x 1.9"). Call if you need help to identify your slides.

Rest assured that 100% of the film area will be captured.

Film scanning

Negative and slide scans yield a higher resolution, sharpness and detail than photo scans.
35mm negatives scanned at 4000 dpi will yield a resolution ~5637 x 3654 pixels easily allowing 11 x 17" Giclee prints.

Medium format

Often, older photographic films are larger format and B&W. Extra care is needed to remove dust from B&W film.
Note - B&W film can not be scanned with digital  ICE and may require Image editing to eliminate specs or scratches from image files.

slide_carousels

Leave your slides in their carrousels

No need to remove slides from the carrousels or slide holders.
